Ridley Scott to Direct New 'Blade Runner'

Quote

We’ve known since March that Warner Bros.’ financing and production company Alcon Entertainment was working on securing a rights package (one that included rights specifically for prequels and sequels, not remakes) for Ridley Scott’s iconic sci-fi thriller “Blade Runner,” but news has been quiet since then. Not so today. Deadline reports that the film’s original director, Ridley Scott, is set to direct and produce a new “Blade Runner” film that “advances [the] seminal and groundbreaking science fiction film.”

The exclusive news doesn’t come with many details – it’s unknown if this next film will be a sequel or a prequel, whether any of the original cast will be involved, and how much it will reach back to the film’s source material, Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Considering that the first film was only very loosely based on that work, it’s safe to say that we probably won’t get too much more Dick in this new film. The only thing we do know is that it will not be a remake, at least as far as Alcon’s rights package guarantees that.

The original “Blade Runner” was released by Warner Bros. in 1982, and the Harrison Ford-starring film was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction). It also routinely tops "best of" lists and was, in 2007, "was named the 2nd most visually influential film of all time by the Visual Effects Society." As Deadline notes, the film was not a blockbuster at the time of its release, but it has clearly gained a huge amount of respect in the intervening thirty years.

hmm, very interesting. i think the only think they can really do is do it as prequel, so they cast a young Deckard as a Bladrunner back in his prime hunting down replicants and tye could play on the thing that question if deckard is a replicant.

I think there is some meat in this to expand the story, but at the same time i want them to just leave the "classic bladrunner" alone

yeah that's a good idea about a prequel

what really worries me though is they will change stuff to suit it today, and i am not just talking about special effects,Bladerunner was set in LA in 2019,which is only 8 years away,if they did do a prequel it would(by right)not have the same look...so the only thing they can do is set the first film in say 2030s or 40s...or just throw the book out of the window and have it set a few hundred years from now, seen as though we have populated other worlds etc

strangely enough it still sounds futuristic and cool that Harrison Ford played a 21st century cop...but its the 21st century now!!,LOL

The fact that Ridley Scott is doing it,does make me feel a little better at ease, when i complain about getting the look right i look at Prometheus(see 'Prometheus' thread)which is a prequel to Alien that he is doing, and it looks like they have got the look spot on

and then another spanner in the works if it was to be a prequel for Deckard, who would play him?..i don't fancy anybody playing that role, except a certain Harrison Ford ripped out of the 70s before he made Star Wars, you can sometimes see some actors and say 'oh he looks like a young ...'but i can't really see Harrison Ford in anyone, and maybe getting someone to 'play' Harrison Ford instead is the wrong way to do it anyway...as long as they don't use Shia,i am sure it will be fine,LOL

i forgot that Bladerunner was the dated 2019, which as you said isnt that far in the future now. i suppose they could do a prequel in present day or maybe do it in 2015, so you got an element of future (so you could add future element stuff) and you have enough time for him to fuck up at whatever he did and retire and tie it into bladerunner(1) but then you wouldnt have a young Deckard

but the situation still remains, who would play Deckard? the only guy i can think of is maybe they guy that is playing the new superman

i dont you could just forget the original and do a whole new trip, bladrunner has too much of a cult folloiwing to start messing with that.
