Well i went and saw this last night and i couldnt wait till the weekend to do a review
Trailer 1st
what a film!!! truly, truly amazing and very moving
the plots is, 28 yrs ago and alien ship stops over Jo'burg in South Africa. After months of speculation and no signs of aliens, the humans break into the craft as discover 1million aliens (Prawns) either sick or dying. The government set up a area for them to live in names District 9 and the Aliens leave peacefully but in squalid conditions. back to the present day and the citizen have had enough of them and want them moved (the Xenophobic racial undertones are more than apprent) and and area named District 10 is setup some 200km away.
Wikus van de Merwe (pronounced "Vickers") put in charge of the "formality" of issuing eviction notices to all the inhabitants of District 9. Vickers is a bit of a nervy nerdy guy but a good man with a huge heart. During the the process of issuing the notice to one of the shacks, Vckers is sprayed with a liquid from a strange unknown canister. He is admitted to hospital after becoming very ill and is discovered he is mutating into on of the Prawns. He his forced to escape a medical research facility when they(the humans) try to "harvest" his body for genetics after it is discovered he is the only human that can used(fire) the (vastly superior) Alien Weapons.
I wont go any further than that and spoil it. But this film was absolutley amazing! its shot with a mix of Docu-camera follawing Vickers, CNNesque TV report and security cameras as well "normal filmograpy" but still in that kind of "docu-style"
its a very moving film as what happens to Vicker is made all the more horrid by him being a really good, honest and caring guy (the little guy/brother you wanna look out for) and you really feel for his situation as the films goes on. I nearly shed a tear at the end of day one when he pulls a piece of manky cardboard over him as he tries to get some sleep in one of the vacant shacks as he flees back to District 9
Really really loved this film, took me a while to get to sleep last night as it really got me thinking. would love to see this again. Its so good i think if i bought on Bluray, it might cheapen the experience and watching it at my lesiure may numb incredible feel/tone the movie has.

Totally agree with this review. The best summer movie I saw (four times!!). I can't wait for the blu-ray movie to come out. I really liked the character development, plot, and hidden social issues in the movie. I truly hope they make a District 10 as good or even better than District 9 (which will be very difficult to do). Seriously, if you guys still haven't seen it you need to go out and watch it.

Agreed with everything Skin, Ali and I went to this movie on the day it came out. Ali and I both agreed that this was tied with Star Trek as the best movie of the summer. We were loving everything about District 9, the action, the (somewhat) love-story, the subtle humour, the story, and the special effects.
Also did anyone else think that the Prawns looked a lot like the Turians from Mass Effect?

yeah, even though i havent played much of ME (i know, i know "Skin you havent lived etc") i did see a similarity

just realised i didnt mention the SFX, i think its becuase they were that good, they actauly look real. The way the prawns interacted with the actors was seemless, a part that i did remember was when a prawn was running thru the shanty town so there was loads debris all over the ground, and the ground reacted with each foot step (be it a piece of cardboard or metal sheet), but not "over the top effect" with dust on each foot step etc, but just as it should be, it just looked so real you believe they were there.
it was also very clever how they designed the prawns to look alien and horrible, so it was easy to bring your prejustices to the surface, but they were still expressive and you could see there "humane" side even with all the tentacles and stuff. the amount of times i just felt sorry for the prawns with their fear reactions etc
my folks are gonna see this at the weekend (they know i am a hard viewer to please with films), i am tempted to go with them to see it again
EDIT: sorry bobbs, didnt mean to stpe on your toes, your pic didnt load up when i viewed it. Great minds think alike

Another thing that kind of upset me about the movie, is that there was a lot of the F bomb. I'm not the type to complain about language, but it just seemed like a tad too much. I still thought the movie was excellent and I'll still purchase it on DVD(who knows I may have a Bluray player aka PS3 by then, so I may buy it on Bluray lol).
