Stephen King-Novels,Movies and TV

i thought i would say something about Stephen King,i am a big fan of his,and he is one of those people, where, maybe you havent read a book of his,but you most certainly of seen a movie based on his works,i pretty much grew up with Stephen King films

and this thread is kind of a salute to Mr King

he has done many Books..are they all horror?,not really, but most are, some are just thrillers..but yeah,we all know Stephen King belongs in the Horror section

now i am not gonna go though all his works, just the ones that i think made a big impressionat least on me when they were made into movies and TV(as i didnt read when i was young,so movies and TV was my only connection with Stephen King)

*************the 70s***************
well, lets see some of the books that were made into films/TV

Carrie-Sissy Spacek,John Travolta-directed by Brian Depalma(scarface,untouchables)-movie
Posted Image

how much of an impression did this film make?
the Shower scene certainly did...'PLUG IT UP,PLUG IT UP'
Posted Image

'Salems Lot-David Soul,James Mason-directed by Tobe Hooper(poltergeist,texas chainsaw massacre)-tv mini series
Posted Image
Impressions -remember the kid at the window?...or the vampire sitting up bolt right out of his coffin when Geoffery Lewis(Julliet lewis' father)was digging him up

*************the 80s****************
the 80s started of really good for Stephen King

The Shining-Jack Nicholson,Shelly Duvall-directed by Stanley Kubrick(2001:A space odyssey,a clockwork orange)-movie
Posted Image
Impressions-c'mon,everyone knows and loves this one,'all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'
note:The Shining was very different from the Novel,Stephen King said how much he loved the film, but was dissapointed at how different from his work it was....the novel got a mini series in the 90s(i also have on DVD),which was more to Stephen Kings work, and it isnt bad

Cujo-Dee Wallace-movie
Posted Image
Impressions- i have only seen this once, and it was a looooong time ago,all i remember is Dee Wallace(the mother from ET and was also the reporter in the original Howling)being trapped in a car with her son by a St Bernard dog who has contracted Rabies..i remember being scared shitless by the dog,and it made me very aware about Rabies...although i love those kind of dogs now
Posted Image

The Dead Zone-Christoper Walken,Herbert Lom,Tom Skerrit,Martin Sheen-directed by David Cronenberg(The Fly,Scanners...a favourite director of mine,or at least makes my top ten....also starred in Clive Barkers Nightbreed)-movie
Posted Image
Impressions-This is it,this is the one,the first stephen king movie i saw, loved every minute of it,and instantly made christopher walken a favourite actor of mine...there is an uncut version as well, that i have on DVD,which shows the cop AFTER he has killed himself with the pair of Scissors...one baaad way to go

Christine-Kieth Gordon,Alexandra Paul,Harry Dean Stanton-directed by John Carpenter(halloween,the fog,escape from new york)-movie
Posted Image
this one was a bit wierd for me,a bit far fetched(well, more than usual),a spirit taking over a car,and can reshape itself if damaged, and hunts down people and kills them..futurama did a great spoof on this though....the book was okay, but i saw the film first and i still had that in my mind when reading it

Children of the Corn-Linda Hamilton,Peter Horton-movie

Posted Image
impressions-this was another early film that i loved, very creepy, the many sequels have however made a bad impression on this early masterpiece .....and a child shall lead them'

stand by me-River phoenix,Corey Feldman,Kiefer sutherland-directed by Rob Reiner(the princess bride,misery,the bucket list)-movie
Posted Image

impressions-everyone in my school saw this, everyone loved it,no one, included me at the time, knew it was stephen king..i read the novella last year perhaps (named 'the body' and is in the compilation 'different seasons')..and its pretty damn close to the film(nearly word for word),Rob Reiner did a brilliant job

The Running Man-Arnie schwarzenegger,Yaphet Kotto-directed by Paul Michael Glaser(the original Starsky from the 70s Starsky and Hutch)-movie

Posted Image

impressions-again this was a film that i never knew was Stephen King until much later, mainly because Stephen King wrote this as Richard Bachman...great film, like most of Arnies films in the 80s,they were very in your face, tongue in cheek...but had some memorable parts...Richards-'I'll be back'.....Killian-'ooonly in a rerun'

Pet Sematary-Dale Midkiff,Fred Gwynne-directed by Mary Lambert-movie

Posted Image
impressions-Very disturbing film, and would you do the same if you had the chance to bring your dead boy back to life?,the scalpel on Herman Munsters Heel was what makes this one memorable........eeeshhh

*****************************The 90's****************************

again the 90's started of great, but although some of his films shone very brightly,it seemed time for Stephen King to move more into television as well

IT-Richard Thomas,John Ritter,Tim Curry-directed by Tommy Lee Wallace(Fright Night II,Halloween III:the season of the witch)-TV mini series
Posted Image
impressions-scary as fuck, man i think i walked in the middle of the road for a long time after seeing this,so that Pennywise the clown couldnt get me from the drains at the side of the pavement..Tim Curry as Pennywise was brilliant
Posted Image

note-the book is pretty good, but one part has all the children getting lost in the sewers,so they all have sex with the girl so they can get their 'senses' right again and find themselves out of being lost ..wasnt really that comfortable reading that part i can tell you!!...i think they are only meant to be like 12 years old if i remember rightly

Misery-James Caan,Kathy Bates-directed by Rob Reiner(stand by me,the princess bride)-movie

great film, unfortunately came out at the same time as Silence of the lambs, which stole a lot of Misery's thunder, although it still got a fair share of Oscars...anyone remember the sledgehammer and the ankle?..in the book its the Axe and the ankle!!!
Posted Image

The Tommyknockers-Jimmy Smits,Marg Helgenberger-TV mini series
Posted Image

so-so,adaptation...decent book, the two leads were good in their roles though,i mainly remember Jimmy Smits taking out his teeth to show pretend he is 'becoming'
Posted Image

The Stand-Rob Lowe,Gary Sinise,Molly Ringwald-directed by Mick Garriss(stephen king veteran-sleepwalkers,the shining mini series,desperation,riding the bullet)-tv mini series
Posted Image
top 3 book of mine, mini series so so..ending was crap, but the casting was good,i thought Rob Lowe was good as well

The Shawshank RedemptionMorgan Freeman,Tim Robbins-directed by Frank darabont(green mile and The mist.both stephen king)

many times voted as peoples favourite film, and is in the different seasons compilation with 'the body'(stand by me),but is entitled as 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption'..if i remember rightly,Morgan freemans character 'RED'..was a red headed Irishman, but other than that pretty much the same i think
Posted Image
The Shining-Steven Weber,Rebecca De Mornay-directed by mick garriss(the stand)-tv mini series
Posted Image
no,it isnt as good as Kubicks 1980 version, this one is based on the book and it still has some pretty good stand out parts, the hedge animals in the snow was a good one, everytime Danny looked up,they got closer and closer, but didnt move if he looked at them, until they were pouncing in mid air over him

Apt Pupil-David Shwimmer,Ian Mckellen,david shwimmers dodgy moustache-directed by Bryan Singer(xmen,xmen 2,usual suspects,superman returns)-movie
Posted Image
i put David shwimmer up there,,although he isnt a main part...a boy suspects his next door neighbour is a Nazi War criminal..and trys to blackmail him...this is another different seasons novel(which also had stand by me and the shawshank redemption...the book only had 4 stories in it,so you can tell how good the books was)

storm of the century-Tim Daly-directed by another stpehen king veteran Graig R.Baxley(Rose Red,Kingdom hospital)
Posted Image

better than i thought it was going to be,i was expecting a show about a big storm, when really it had typical stpehen king horror in it(this wasnt a book, stephen king did the screenplay)

The Green Mile-Tom Hanks,Michael Clark Duncan-directed by Frank darabont(shawshank redemption)

another stephen king/prison film for darabont, good film,i remember the book coming out as a serial, each part being released monthly,i bought the first and then stopped,LOL...i think he said he was trying to bring the style back as that was how charles dickens had released his novels...not sure it worked, but the actual book was re-released fully and was still very much appreciated by everybody

**************************The '00's****************************

the 2000s to be exact,if you are still not used to saying 'the naughties'

Rose Red-Nancy Travis.Julian Sands,Melanie Lynskey-Directed by Craig R.Baxley(storm of the century)-TV mini series
Posted Image

again, not a book..a group of people with different kinds of Psychic powers enter Rose Red,famed for being a very haunted house, and try to stay over night.....if any of you liked 'The Haunting',this will be right up your street,i loved this one,is was brilliantly done, and it also had Melanie Lynskey in it,who is a 'heelllllllloooo Nurse!!!!'(two and a half men)..this mini series spawned a prequel names the diary of ellen Rimbauer..Rose Red is a great mini series, and of course i have it on DVD
Posted Image

Kingdom Hospital-Andrew McCarthy,Diane Ladd-directed by Craig R baxley-TV mini series
Posted Image
remake of a german television series the kingdom..or swedish or some damn European country, didnt get good reviews at all,i didnt mind it,but there could of been more genuine scares, good cast though, look out for Jack Coleman as the artist(he plays clairs/the cheerleaders dad Noah in Heroes),....and if you ask me,we dont see enough of andrew mccarthy nowadays
Posted Image

1408-John Cusack,Samual L Jackson-movie
Posted Image

a short story from Everythings eventual,it was a good enough short story, but not i think story that deserved its own movie, the film is so-so,wish i downloaded it from xbox live before buying it on DVD though..its entertaining enough, but not very scaryPosted Image

1,4,0,and 8 adding up to of course........

oh and that quote on the cover art about it being the best stephen king adaptation with the shining?....utter bollocks

The Mist-Thomas Jane,Laurie Holden-directed by Frank darabont
Posted Image

the short story,is in skeleton crew and i read it in January, although i had no idea this movie was being made,it was nice opening the papers and seein this film get 10 out of 10...still havent seen it myself, but the book was a good one

********************************whats next?**********************************

well,he has had some great projects that have been committed to film, since the 70's.....he has had a lot more than i have posted here...good and bad

creepshow 1 and 2(everyone)
firestarter(drew barrymore,george c scott)
Posted Image
cats eye(drew barrymore,james woods)
Posted Image
silver bullet(corey haim)
maximum overdrive(oh dear..emilio estevez)
Posted Image
the lawnmower man(although stephen king has now has his name removed since)
graveyard shift(brad dourif-grima wormtongue)
sometimes they come back(tim matherson)
sleepwalkers(ron pearlman,joe dante,john landis and clive barker)
the dark half(timothy hutton, directed by george a romero)
Posted Image
hearts of atlantis(anthony hopkins)
desperation(ron pearlman...TAK!)
nightmares and dreamscapes tv mini series based on a lot of short stories, some that featured in more than the novel nightmares and dreamscapes
secret window(johnny depp)
Posted Image

to name a few

so for the future....

well,From a Buick 8 will be directed by Tobe Hooper
a new creepshow will be making an appearance(also known as creepshow 4...where the fuck was 3?)
bag of bones-another film for Mick Garris...great book, good old ghost story..should be a good film

and about time

the stephen king/peter straub book, steven spielberg bought the rights to this back in about 1985....The Talisman

the first of 3 books from Stephen King/Peter Straub...second being Black House, the third not been released/written yet..very good books,a mix of horror, time traveling, fantasy

also Cell will be happening as well,a recent novel of Kings, about the dangers of cellular Phones, kind of....makes people, turn into zombies, directed by Eli Roth(grindhouse, deathproof, cabin fever)

all,looks promising..as said i know i have missed out a lot

last thing (for now)...no stephen king thread can be without the mighty Dark Tower books, these are his masterpieces..started in about 1970,kinda stopped after number 4 in the 90's,until a van nearly killed stephen king, and then he raced to finish of the 7 book epic, with numbers 5,6 and 7 all being released a few years ago

it is a series of books telling the adventures of an aging cowboy and his quest to get to the dark tower, with everything from pirates to robots, our world, his world, other worlds all included along the way
The Dark Tower I:The Gunslinger
The Dark Tower II:The Drawing of the Three
The Dark Tower III:The Waste Lands
The Dark Tower IV:Wizard and Glass
The Dark Tower V:Wolves of the Calla
The Dark Tower VI:Song of Susannah
The Dark Tower VII:The Dark Tower

they tied a lot of stuff up,and the books had a lot of characters/things from his other books...the crimson king for one, being mentioned a lot in some of his other books

could these books make a great film?....i dont think they could film the series no...but a video game i think would work, there is currently a MARVEL comic book being made of the series, which i think would be great...everythings eventual also has a short story relating to the dark tower books/Roland
Posted Image

thanks for putting up with all this(if you are still here),and please tell me your favourite stephen king stuff...it could be anything, and tell me if it frightened you or how it made you feel

the end...for now

Congrats on the details, it's neat to see what this guy has developed for mass media over the years. Not much of horror fan, but I did like "Stand by me".

The kid that was dead in the movie looked just like a gal that was in high school. I didn't make fun of her because of it, she was a nice person, but it just creeped me out seeing the dead kid walking around with a short Kelly Mcgillis(Top Gun) haircut.

I remember seeing Cujo at a Drive-in, it freaked me out, even though I couldn't here it. We were watching another screen.(there were four different screens that you could see from your car)

Did King write the Howling? I get that confused with the Wolfen and author Whiley Strieber. I like his books.
Give a man a beer, and he wastes an hour.
Teach a man to brew, and he wastes a lifetime."

no,he didnt do the Howling..he did however do,like a comic/graphic novel called 'Cycle of the werewolf' which becamse Silver Bullet with Corey Haim,in a wheelchair i think(long time since i have seen that one)

yeah the whole Horror thing,is certainly starting to take a backseat for more thrillers, but they do still crop up..some are just suspense

there is a great short story in,i think Everythings Eventual, called Autopsy room 4..a guy gets bitten by a snake, but the wound is so small that doctors dont see it,and they suspect he has had a heart attack and died,he has however just been paralysed, and as he is pronouced dead, the doctors come to the room to preform the autopsy, with him still very much alive, but cant move or speak..but can see and hear everything that is going on...in classic King style,it is taken from the guys point of view...so thats not Horror as such, but more suspense, which a lot of his books are,but a lot are mistaken for Horror, because it is Stephen King...take Misery for one, more suspense than Horror if you ask me

Oh man, Stephen King is my all time favorite author. This might sound funny, but I remember going to the library when I was in sixth grade and reading his books like crazy. Favorites for me are The Shining, The Stand, Cujo, Christine, It, Misery, The Tommyknockers, The Dark Half, Needful Things, Gerald's Game, Dolores Claiborne, Desperation, Bag of Bones, and of course his collections (Night Shift, Different Seasons, Skeleton Crew, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, and Four Past Midnight).

i did that on purpose,Pogue,i got the book recently but havent read it yet,and refuse to watch the film until i have read the book...heard the movie isnt very good, but i will be the judge of that after i have read the book...it sounds good

the guy who went into rehab?..hmm,i know Damien Lewis from Band of Brothers is in it

EDIT:wow,looking on IMDB,it has a great cast..morgan freeman,jason lee(my name is earl)thomas jane,Tom sizemore,Donnie wahlberg....

so who was the one just in rehab?

after i have read the book i am reading now(state of fear -michael crichton),its time for some dreamcatcher

and Tier,Desperation is a (kind of)sequel to The Regulators(same cast,some older,some not,some know each other some dont),which was written by Richard Bachman(stephen king)...both great books,and also a little disturbing...TAK!

Children of the Corn-Linda Hamilton,Peter Horton-movie

impressions-this was another early film that i loved, very creepy, the many sequels have however made a bad impression on this early masterpiece .....and a child shall lead them'

stand by me-River phoenix,Corey Feldman,Kiefer sutherland-directed by Rob Reiner(the princess bride,misery,the bucket list)-movie

impressions-everyone in my school saw this, everyone loved it,no one, included me at the time, knew it was stephen king..i read the novella last year perhaps (named 'the body' and is in the compilation 'different seasons')..and its pretty damn close to the film(nearly word for word),Rob Reiner did a brilliant job

Okaay, wll i tried to watch pet semmetary when i was like 8 with my dad. Needless to say i was scared shitless by the dead animals, let alone the kid

In Night Shift(one of many short story compilation books)Pat there is a prequel to 'Salems lot, called simply Jerusalems lot..i think its a prequel,i read that about 4 or 5 years ago

i did see the remake of 'Salems lot, with Rob Lowe, and i think Rutger hauer,it was okay, but not as shocking i think

Carrie also got remade, but i never saw that version..or Carrie II:the Rage, pretty much all of the sequels aren't Stephen King, and are just cashing in

The only thrller/horror one I saw was the Tommyknockers. I am not big on those. Don't like being scared... not entertainment for me

Stand by me was good... but you didn't mention Wil Wheaton was one of the boys (as in Wesley Crusher star trek TNG).

Was Storm of the Century stephen King also.. I did see that..good story ... but don't like scary

LOL,i didnt mention that the other 3 boys were
River Phoenix R.I.P
Corey Feldman
and Jerry O 'Connell(sceam 2)
and Kiefer sutherland was the bully
John Cusack played Wil Weatons older brother in a flashback
and his father was played by the asshole gym teacher in nightmare on elm st part 2
and Richard Dreyfuss was the writer/narrator,who you see briefly at the end..

..either,LOL

damn great film

i am not sure what it is,but i love being spooked,i love the hairs on my arm standing on end......'The Haunting'(original 1960's version)is so well done, you dont see anything, but camera angles noises and things just off focus really make the film believeable....and even for a black and white film it makes a lot of colour films bow its head in shame...Stephen Kings Rose Red is prolly as close as we(I) will get to The Haunting,as the remake of the haunting with catherine zeta jones and Liam neeson and owen wilson was dogshit on a plate

back in 1984(prolly 85 actually when it was released on VHS..i was 8 or 9) when my sister showed me Elm street part one,and Tina is being dragged along the ceiling by an invisible hand, trailing blood,i can safely say that i didnt like being spooked...but since that film, something in me changed....haunted house stories i think are the best, there is real excitement,in the exploration,as me and my friends used to explore so called haunted houses when we were young, maybe Ghostbusters had something to do with it.....me,my mum,my sister,my mate and my mates sister all shit ourselves in the cinema when we went to see that...when they were in the New York Library(FB you will know that library)..and Ray shouts 'GET HER'...but that was a good scare...that was prolly same time as when i saw elm street 1...guess,me knowing Ghostbusters was a comedy made the scare good, whereas Freddy was a bastard

EDIT:pat...no,i think it was the same place...as 'Salem is short for Jerusalem..i think some of the story was on a road on the outskirts of the town though(maybe in the snow...or at night),so i think it happened before they shortened the towns name to just 'Salems Lot

but,be aware 4 years is a long time for me and books, fucking Big Bird could of had a lead role in it and i would of forgotten,my memory is great with movies, but with books i really need a clue,to help my brain to recollect some stuff sometimes

in movies (maybe its the same for all of you)but you remember scenes,obviously...but in books, you have to remember your inner eye -what you imagined- at the time of reading,so it can be difficult(at least for me)

sorry to rattle on folks

I loved the book Sometimes They Come Back but hated the movie. I know there are differences between the book and movie but I hate it when they totally change the end.
