is the router assigning IPs as wireless equipment is turned on? EG the 1st wireless machine will be assigned .101 the 2nd will get .102 etc. Is there anything i can do? we do have a Nintendo Wii downstairs and that is connected to the network wirelessly as well

Those are the addresses the router assigns. what you do then is tell the 360 to use and address outside that range like 192.168.1.200. Then the router won't change it. You have to change your setting on the xbox so that it is not automatically picking up your settings
If this isn't specific enough let me know. I was trying to avoid getting too techy

so it doesnt matter what IP address I use on my 360, it will still connect to my wireless network regardless, as long as the 360 has the WEP key to access it?
Then on my router, apply the port forwarding and the DMZ settings to the new IP i have given my 360 (192.168.1.200)
wow that sounds really technical but I understand it, how cool/nerdy am I

I know what you mean, but sometimes it just isnt practical. i have never noticed a drop in speed with wireless, I am usally the last one to get lag even when i playing with you guys on the other side of the planet.
As long as you have your router set so that anything coming to/from the 360's IP bypasses the firewall (DMZ) you will be fine. another reason i have to all these funny settings is so i can chat other guys who may not be as techo savvy and unknowningly have restrictions on their setup, plus its cool to know
I did the manual setup, but realized i had to manually assign EVERYTHING, i will have a bit more of a nose around today, it goes tits up i will jsut got baxck to Auto setup and just have to look on my router and apply the DMZ and port forwarding to what ever IP my router assigns my 360
I remember when i found the wonderful world of "port forwarding" on BF2 with all the chat option and being unable to get into games

Pat, i think i have got me head round what you are explaining. sound similar to what we have...i think.
so you have to unplug the modem from the phone socket (and therefore the computers) and plug in the wireless router into the phone socket so you can game, am i right so far?
what i do is have the modem into the phone socket, then plug that into the wireless router, the router should have a couple of ethernet outputs on it, use those to connect your PCs (so your PCs are connected to the modem but via the router) and the router gives you your wireless access for you to game and laptop
phone socket to Modem, Modem to the Router, Router to the 2PCs (wired), laptop and 360 connected wirelessly to the router.
also consantly plugging and unplugging stuff from modems and routers should be avioded as you are gonna increase the changes of something breaking

Poon, the reason you can't have 2 modems connected to 1 connection at the same time is because only one MAC address of the modems can be connected to your ISP at one time. The logical way, as Skin mentioned, is to have a single modem connected to a single router and connecting everything to that router. The time you can have 2 modems connected is when you have 2 services from your ISP (meaning one MAC address per ISP subscription). Of course that is a waste of money unless you are a heavy downloader and online gamer.

thanx Tier, I got it all sorted, all it did was use all the settings the Auto setup listed and just entered them in manually but with a different IP address (.201) then applied the DMZ and the port forwarding to that IP. turned off then turned on the Router and bingo, the IP stays the same not need to go into the router and NAT setting are open
Poon, i know you said funds are a bit tight but you really need a gaming adapter to solve your problem. dont bother with the 360 one, granted they clip on the back, powered by USB, and its all neat and tidy but they just aint worth the dough

I use one of these

they dont look that good and they do take up another plug socket but it does the job.
