Component Vs Hdmi

As you know my 360 went tits up just over a week ago and in my panic i went out and bought a replacement.
My previous 360 could only be connected via component connection and i have been perfectly happy.
As you also know all the 360s (except Arcade version) now come with a HDMI output. I have bought the dongles and cables so my new 360 can have pride of place using the HDMI connection on my TV.
so I am playing RB6V2 thru HDMI, things is, it dont look as good. I dunno if it what i have become used to or what, but the HDMI looks too "gritty" almost too sharp. People have said that it would be very hard to tell the difference Component and HDMI (the diffeence only seen on massive TVs). I could quite easily and to my surprise it wasnt in HDMI favour.
Component has always looked great, the colours are full and the detail has been amazing (my jaw dropped when i 1st hooked my 360 up in HD). I have now put it back to component, I suppose i should have tried a HD DVD but again, compont has always offered me an amazing picture.
Has anyone else seen this dramatic difference with there new HDMI 360s?

Mmmm, well maybe I'll do the same thing, and let you know what my conclusions are. I will say this though, my TV has different settings for HDMI and component. I have also noticed the blacks are blacker with my HDMI as opposed to my component. I'm sure Tier will tune in with all the factual data soon, so I'll hook up my component and give my 2 cents later.

Man, I guess you do know me Wnchstr, hehe. HDMI and component are supposed to look identical in paper, but in reality they aren't. An HDMI image will always give you a sharper look, which isn't always the best thing. Think to the difference between DVI and VGA where DVI will be sharp but at times when the source isn't truly high def then it makes the pixels look choppy. I've noticed that for non-high def sources (dvds, video games, etc.) component cables make the images look better than HDMI. For high def sources (hd-dvds, blu-ray discs, etc.) HDMI cables make them look better than component.

When you are at the settings page on the 360 screen, what is the screen settings? Sometimes it may not be et at 780p, or 1080i, when I started COD4 i had it set at 480P.

the screen settings are 720p, with HDMI I did take it to 1080i but it look no different.
thanx for the info Tier, so it looks like component is better for gaming, HDMI is more for your HD DVD/BluRays. I think i will go back to component as i play more HD games than i do watch HD movies and the 360 is a games console at the end of the day.

Hey Skin, quick question since you pay attention to resolutions. What do you think looks best on the 360, 1080i or 720p? I've tried to compare both and there really isn't that much of a difference to me, although with cable I tend to prefer the HD channels running at 720p than those at 1080i.

well, my TVs native res is 720p, and as i said when i change the 360 to 1080i (and my TV said it was displaying 1080i) it looked just as bad/good (both of these res's where viewed using the HDMI cable connection). From what i have heard, its better to run at a "P" (progessive) resolution than at a "i" (interlaced) as it is smoother.
Me personally, HDMI has been a bit of a letdown, the component connection just looks alot smoother and things merge better than the "choppyness" i have just witnessed with HDMI

Well I have played both HDMI and component video, and I have to say at 720p or 1080i, I can't tell the difference between HDMI or component. Grant it I have a LCD TV, so maybe that's why. If I was to take a stab at it, I think HDMI looked crisper, but who knows. So there you have it Skin, my 2 cents. You know I just noticed on my gamercard that if I play Halo3 then back to RBV2 it would look like 2, 3, 4. haha

There is a new option under your systems blade on your dashboard, I think it is screen res. . Anyways , never seen an option "Optimal Settings" . I switched that to optimal and now picture looks outstanding. Ive never seen the option b4 must be somethin new. Try doin that skin youll love it. Made a huge difference.
