Last night playing CoD4, some of may recall me saying i had black dots appearing during the maps. well turned it on this morning same story (as in campaign as well), put in RB6 and that has green lines on it, put in FoW and i was watching it thru the Matrix. So i unplug everything give it a hoover thre best i could hook it it all up (you know what coming...) RRoD, but only on the bottom right and a complimentary E74 code.
Doing internet searches it says it could be an AV cable problem, gave it a clean (cable and port) same shit, it also says it could be a GPu problem, that would make sense as its only gameplay that was effected, game menus and dashboard "was" ok.
As you all know I have taken 2 weeks leave/vacation in the run up to RB6v2. I cant got without my 360, not this close to RB6V2 nor while i am off from work. so i gotta go and buy a new to send this one off.

That's exactly what happened to my 360. It's a hardware failure. Time to call M$ to send you a box. Or just go out and by you a new elite. The whole matrixy thing was exactly what happened first, then RRoD. Also just to cheer you up, I read that one of Microsofts own 360's demo got the RRoD while at the Game Developer's Conference in San Fransico. hahaha

well, I called the helpline and it turns out the E74 error aint a "proper" RRoD is not covered by the warranty! and they want 60notes to fix it (just my luck, I get a console that cant even break down properly!) and said it could be upto 3 weeks for repair and return (with RB6V2 round the corner? Sod that!) I have gone out and bought a new one, attached the old HDD and all is well (so far). I was thinking about getting an Elite but i will have no use for the 120Gb Hard drive (plus all my acessories are in white)

I am gonna give my old one to my Dad for the price of the repair, I am gonna give him the PGR4 game that came with the new 360 (it all helps to butter him to get the 20Mb internet )

I bought a HDMI cable as all 360s (bar the acrade version) come with a HDMI output (my TV's HDMI input is currently vacant as I use the Componet connection), problem is i cant actually use the HDMI cable and the 360s AV out cable together (I use the optical output on it for surround sound) as the 360s AV cable housing is so big it blocks access to HDMI port! . so i either use it as i used to (componet and optical) or a i buy another HDMI cable and use one from the 360 to the suround sound then another to got from the surround sound to the TV. Oh, well i should just be happy that i am back in business

Also buying the 360 has given me like £5 of loyalty points so that will go toward either RB6V2 or another HDMI cable, every cloud.....

I probably read your post wrong skin, but you should be able to use Hdmi and optical on the back of the console because I am. My console came with a seperate dongle which plugs into the AV but only has connections for the old red and white plugs and a socket for the optical lead. Have a look through your box again just to make sure.

this is back of my new 360,
you cant see the HDMI output as the AV block covers it, stopping me getting the HDMI cable in.
The cable coming out on the left side of the AV block goes to the TV and the black cable next to it is optical going to the suround sound. If i remove the AV block and connect it to the TV using the HDMI cable, there is then nothing going to the surround sound system

I think you have got one of these with your Elite that allows you to use the HDMI cable and the optical out



I have seen people prise off the plastic surround on the AV block so it doesnt obstruct the HDMI output, but i dont fancy doind that

yeah i think we both found the answer to the question. As you have said/shown the Elites AV dongle is smaller allowing access for the HDMI cable, i will either get one of those or another HDMI to run thru the surround sound or....juts leave it as I had/have it

sorry to hear your bad news Skin(did you get that second 360 you were saying?..elite?)..wierd actually as you have always suspected this was going to happen

whether this will comfort you or not,August 2006 when i broke my disc tray,i called MS and the same day they got me a UPS van and i had the 360 back inside the week(5 days i think)...okay,not the same porblem and maybe things have changed since then...but hopefully MS would of improved things since then because oif the whole RRoD thing

I did always say that if my 360 packed up then i would get an Elite, but thinking it thru, i thought, i have no need for a 120Gb HDD, the Pro versions all now have HDMI and as I said, all my extras that i have bought (controllers, livecam, wireless headset, plug and play charger HD DVd drive, etc) are in all white so it would look a bit silly IMO (i must have some kinda OCD wanting everything to match).

I think all this chat about on and offline about RRoDs (a mate in work has just fell fowl of it as well) made my 360 feel a bit left out, still i got just over 2 years out of her and i think that is an achievement worth noting

Yeah, I had the whole error 74 thing or whatever. When I called Micro$oft about it and they told me it's not a, and I quote, "real Red Ring of Death". I replied, "As opposed to a fake one?". But they said that they weren't gonna fix it under my warranty. Which is rubbish because they should fix anything that goes wrong with a console if it's under warranty. But anyways... that sucks man, hopefully you can get a 360 cheap enough. :D

I wonder if there is a tutorial out there Skin on how to give your old 360 a proper RROD then they could replace it for you

lol, its very tempting.

i now have the choice to either to use the HDMI or stay with the componet connection. If I stick with my componet set up I feel the HDMI output is going to waste (silly i know) plus i have already bought a HDMI cable already. If I do want to use the HDMI i will either have to buy one of the HDMI dongles that mobeye and myself showed above (£30!) or a buy a 2nd HDMI cable to run from my 360 to my TV but via the surround sound.

Actually i have just had a thought and i cant be bothered to delete all this. my surround sound manual says that if want to use the 2 into 1 HDMI facility, i would have to have the suround sound switched on to get a the signal from an input (e.g the 360) output to the TV, so even if i didnt want to use the surround sound, it would still have to be turned on regardless, sod that i think i have answered my own question?

Anyone want a HDMI cable?

When I say the heading of this post my mouth dropped open. First thing I thought was "Rb6 Is coming and he won't have a 360." Sorry to hear about it but I'm glad you're getting a new one.

When I got the RROD they asked me several times if the ring went all the way around. I finally asked them why that was so important and they told me warranty would'nt cover it if it didn't .

Well jesus how bout you beat the damn thing senseless till 3 red rings show up. In theory all he has to do is leave it on for a long time with the way it is now for it to finally take a full shit.

Actually, remember the old towel trick? Wrap it in a towel and run it for about 15 mins to get 2-3 hours out of it?

well, thanx for all the "advice". Even if i did get a "full" RRoD, i still would have bought a replacement, there was no way i would go without a 360 over my holiday and certainly not with Vegas 2 round the corner.
