I've had some problems with my Live connection over the last couple of days. I randomly get discounnected or I can't get connected at all. When I run a test on my 360 it always fails at MTU. What is that? What does it do? Where does the problem lie (with my 360 or internet connection)?

Last night I couldn't get connected to Live if I was on the dashboard. When I tried to play my arcade games they were all marked as trail versions and that I needed to download the full version. But I couldn't get connected to Live to do that. I put Call of Duty 4 in (while my dashboard said I wasn't connected to Live) but I was able to get into a multiplayer game. Once I went back to my dashboard I was disconnected from Live again.

Theses are some of the same problems I had over the xmas holiday when Live was acting all funky. I haven't had problems since then until now and things are acting up again. I got on this morning breifly and things were all fine. I'm playing on my Arcade console as my brother Kai has my original console. If this is something that might eventually lead to a RRoD I want to be prepared and see if I can't fix it or hold it off as long as possible. I'm not buying another console if I have to send this one back.

Well, first thing you want to do is look at the error read out on the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU). Let me link you to two sites http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840419 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908882 which should explain things a little better. What could be causing the problem can be the router (firmware or values) or the modem (your ISP). Also, if you haven't already done so, you should try disconnecting the power to your modem and router for about 30 seconds and then connecting them again. This used to clear up the same issue I had with the Xbox before right away.

I unplugged the router and modem the night before in a bid to get everything to work. It seemed to do the trick . . . then. The router is new. I got it back in October/November (can't remember exactly). It's on the approved Xbox list. My modem is at least 6 years old. I'd like to get a new one that has an off switch but I haven't figured out all the details yet (brand, type, etc.).

You're looking at two problems right now, the first is your network connection and I see Tier has already pointed you in the right direction for that.

The second problem is you can't play arcade games if you are not connected to LIVE (because of the first problem). This is caused by the DRM the MS has in place on all downloaded content.
When you DL something from Marketplace, it is tied to two things, your GT and your console.

If you move to another console, you are breaking the DRM. You can now only use downloaded items if you are connected to LIVE.

This gets much more complicated if multiple people are using the same console. Bottom line is, if you cannot connect to LIVE for any reason, you can only access DLC from the console you originally downloaded it from.
Respawns give you a chance to suck less.

My Xbox has it's own blog, does yours?
