I've been having A LOT of problems staying connected to Xbox Live lately. My biggest compliant is that it was mostly happening while I was playing ranked matches in Catan. Not only do I not get any credit for playing the game (I'll take a lose if my victory points count) but everyone was sending me bad feedback for quiting early.

Dain Bramage and I have tried some various configurations out and it hasn't helped. My latest attempt to fix the problem is connecting my modem directly to my 360 and bypassing my router all together. Unfortunately this means my PC gets disconnected from my modem. Fortunately it seems that it might have fixed the problem. I was able to play a ranked match of Catan and a very long tournament of Texas Hold 'Em without getting dropped. I've only been playing free tournaments just in case I get dropped.

I'm going to test this theory out for a couple of days playing various games (disk and arcade) and see if I have any more problems. If not, it looks like I will need to get a new router (mine's about 4 or 5 years old). I'd hate to waste $40 on a router if it doesn't fix the problem. So if you see me getting off and on all the time I apologize. And if we're playing and I suddenly drop out it's not because of what you said. :)

You really don't need to get a new router Pengwenn, just update the firmware and make sure that it's compatible with the 360 (BTW, most companies are now making sure their firmware updates support the leading consoles). I know many people hate messing around with firmware and drivers but trust me, a crappy router can be good as new with a fresh firmware update. Also, the poor man's way of getting on XBL and also using your computer with a modem is to use the ethernet jack for the console and the usb (almost all the modems have both outputs) one for the computer. I won't even comment on the "If you see me getting off" part, hehe. Ohhhhhh, you mean getting logged off; I get it now :D

I think Dain tried a firmware update. I don't know if it worked. I have a cable modem and when I was rewiring things I don't think I saw a USB connection on the thing. One of the hassles I have to deal with is that my cable outlets are on the completely opposite side of the apartments from where my office and desk are. I have an ethernet cable that runs along the floor from one end of my apt to the other just so my computer can get connected. Yes, I could go wireless but I don't want to. Still don't trust those wireless connections yet as far as security goes. {this is where you insert a lecture on how far wireless connections (as far as security is concerned) have come since back in the day}

Most of this computer geeky stuff is over my head. All I know is that I can't play. And when I can't play I get frustrated. I was getting blown out of Gears of War every other round. I just need to find me a computer-nerd-sugar-daddy.

Well makes sense if you don't want to go wifi........unless you have a cell phone or wireless telephone. Honestly though, if someone wants to track you, they can do it thru this site, your blog, via emails, IMs, or anything that has your IP address. Now, I'm not saying that wifi is 100% secure; not even if you have 128-bit WEP, but then again nothing is 100% secure. I'm just saying that most people will not be able to hack into your network if you set up your encryption right. Hopefully you get a new router, even if it isn't wireless, that way you don't have to keep changing the ethernet cable out when you want to play and then go online.

I think there might be something in addition to the router. I joined winchster's Battlefront 2 game last night. We were getting close to the end of the first map I joined when my tv screen went blank. I could tell from my headset I had lost connection with the game. I kept waiting for my dashboard to come up but I was just staring at a black tv screen. My Xbox button on my controler wouldn't work either.

I opened the tray to take the game out hoping that would restore the dashboard. Nothing. I then turned the 360 off and then back one and while it was loading up it froze with the Xbox logo on the screen. I turned it off again and waited 10 minutes before turning on. It loaded up just fine.

I played a ranked match of Catan and won. When I got the winning victory point I got the message that I had "lost connection to the game." The funny thing was I could still move around in the in-game menus but my gamer picture was not in my box. My dashboard still said I was connect to Live (I got credit for the game)

I played a second match of Catan and everything was fine (except that I lost). Texas Hold 'Em worked fine. I just have this bad feeling that all of this is just a precursor to getting (dare I say it) the red rings of death.

Yeah, mine started acting real wierd like that about a week before it locked up. I knew there was a problem, but I couldn't pinpoint it, then BAM! it was all over.

If you find that you have to resynch your wireless controller, better get ready to send it out.

Oh man, that's really bad. See, hearing things like this make me want to stay away from getting a 360. I mean, the ones we have at work I can see why they are malfunctioning given the massive amounts of hours the testers put into them. We are talking about them being on for 12-18 hours straight. But I doubt you guys that have had to return your systems here play them that much each day.

Good news: it's not a router issue.

Bad news: I got the Red Ring of Death.

I'm officially in mourning so if I snap at you it's just the grief talking.

Oh man Pengwenn, that really sucks. Do you have a backup? I think Homebuilt, Gigi and Pogue said it took them around 4 weeks to get their 360 fixed.
