I want to replace my wireless router to an "n" and usb router. The only 2 models I've found with usb are the linksys and apple airport extreme. Looking online the linksys reviews are crap and the apple seems to be solid except with the 360 connecting to it.

Ha anyone found or know if an apple router can run an 360 or an xbox?

A friend of mine has used the Apple Airport with his 360 but he doesn't use the firmware for the router that Apple supplies (meaning he uses homebrew firmware). Yeah Nat, most N routers are crap and I always advice people to stay away from them. Linksys makes good G routers but the N ones are just bad. I personally think it's the shotty work of MIMO (multiple input multiple output). Plus remember, the 802.11n publication isn't due until Sept. '08 to March '09. That's why now manufacturers are forced to label their N routers "pre-n", "draft n" or "MIMO-base" because it was misleading the public into thinking that these were the final N publication. BTW, why do you want the N routers? If it's for distance then I understand since G goes 38 meters and N goes 70 meters. Or is it that you have an ISP with more than 19Mb/s and thus want to go to an N router which has a max of 74Mb/s.

I actually want the usb connection to have a portable hard drive attached. It'll be in one spot and Left alone. I don't like bringing my laptops to the hard drive for backing up our business files (yes, me lazy ass!). I'll be hardwiring my xbox/soon to be 360 to it. The "n" isn't that important, I'm cheap ass with 3mb DSL, and I have a "b" in one laptop and a Broadcom "G" in the other.

Any "G" routers with usb besides the old ugly airport out there?

My company I work with splits the cost of comp. equipment so I can get an "n" for cheap.

Sounds like you need something like THIS.

It's an external hard drive enclosure, but in addition to a USB port, it also has a LAN port.
Plug it directly into any router/switch and you have an instant file server. It uses any IDE hard drive you have laying around the house (maybe holding up the short leg of the kitchen table?), or you can just go out and buy one.

I'll be getting one soon to replace my aging HP Netserver.
Respawns give you a chance to suck less.

My Xbox has it's own blog, does yours?

Now my true colors are showing=Is there one for 2.5? I don't have enough outlets near where i want it to be and and I want to run off usb power only. Do ethernet inputs hold as much juice as a usb?

I was thinking of buying Seagate Freeagent Go (no WD, mine went broke dick in less than 8 months and seagate has a 3 year warranty). Price is reasonable for one as well.

I'm not in a need of an extremely large file server, alot of pdf's, word doc's will be stored, as well as mp3, some video.

Am i a picky ass or am I a picky ass?

Ah, now I see why you wanted the usb thingy.  Speaking of hard drives, I got the Western Digital 1TB My Book World Edition 2 and had to take it back.  Thing was so freaking noisey, sounded like the damn thing was going to take off.  Went instead with a Buffalo Tera Station Pro 2 with 2 TB.  Not as pretty as the WD one but way better.  Hoping I can save enough and get me a 4TB one later on.

Shit, wish I would have seen this post early on so I could have gone today to Best Buy.  Hopefully they have them still tomorrow.  Those prices are just crazy; thanks for looking out Nat!

well I picked up the airport at CC today. I stopped in to get a Freeagent Go120GB for $90 on clearance and turned around in the isle and saw the airport extreme for $155. Good Deal for both.

2 out of the 4 items are running with it. A laptop and xbox or running smoothly. Have yet to hook up the hard drive, maybe tonight. Another laptop will see the wireless connection but will not connect to the unit. I installed the software on it and for a little bit got it to run with cable. But the wireless is screwing up. I even threw a pcmica "B" lucent card in the laptop and it still did the same thing of seeing it but not connecting or asking for a password.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Only thing I would suggest is maybe changing the frequency channel and also setting up your security (WPA2 or 128 bit WEP). I remember I got shitty wifi reception when 3 other people got WAPs around here, but after I changed the default frequency channel I got great connection speeds. I like to lock my wifi just because there are so many leechers out there that overuse the connections. It would be okay if all they did was surf the net, but most of them are ul and dl huge files; and if anyone is going to do that it's going to be only me.

Well at the moment I'm seting my laptop to restore from the previous day. All I can say is their tech number for Apple will be getting a call from me about the F **&ed hangups and screwed connections this bastard has given in 4 hours of my life. I'm pissed at how something they want you to follow changes mid stream and new things pop up where they didn't before

By the way: cheap ass hard drive Staples: Mac Daddy Maxtor 500 gb $115 external

Damn, not a bad price for $99.98 with the instant coupon. I just have had 3 bad experiences with Maxtor, although the 500GB storage is looking nice. Maybe a nice Xmas present.
